It was interesting and learned some more important historical facts. From Governor of New York to president of the United States.
No problem.
This book has the distinction of being the absolute worst biography I have ever read. You get no sense of Grover Cleveland the man or the politician. The author will quote endlessly from Cleveland speeches that have to do with the political minutiae of the time, but have almost nothing to do with the larger picture. He was the Sheriff of Erie County in New York. Did we really need the entire content of his acceptance speech? It also cuts off suddenly before his (unsuccessful) run for a second term.
I am in the process of reading a biography of every president, since Grover Cleveland is the only president to be elected in two non-consecutive terms, I will try another after I read a biography of Benjamin Harrison. I hope the next one is better.
History doesn't touch on this era so it becomes essentiat to research scholar who have done extensive research on their own.
Book met my expectations. All aspects of the purchase was fine. Book was in good shape. I was well satisfied.
A scholarly work that includes full text of speeches. Pedantic at times. Author avoids even hints at scandals Cleveland endured. Its merit is it gives a clear picture of Cleveland's reasoning and integrity in public life. A good balance is provided by "A Secret Life The Lies and Scandals of Grover Cleveland" by Lachman
